Gazing into the Crystal Ball for Singapore’s Music Education

I was recently invited to be one of the workshop panelists at a recent weeklong 2013 Kodály Course organised by Singapore Teachers’ Academy for the aRts (STAR). A ‘music commando’ team of clinicians gathered here, comprising of the Principal of the Kodály institute (KI), Dr. László Nemes, KI lecturer Szirányi Borbála (fondly known as ‘Bori’) as well as Lucinda Geoghegan who works with the Royal College of Scotland & the National Youth Choir of Scotland (NYCoS). Sheryl Sim, in her dual capacity as a fellow alumnus of KI and STAR staff was also on the panel as one of two Singaporeans offering training & local perspectives. In the course of the week, common singing (mass singing in the mornings and evenings), methodology (the science & art of teaching), musicianship (building of personal musical skills), singing games for children (experiencing and designing music games) were delivered by the panel. From the simplest activities to the most complex and demanding of tasks, careful preparation, sophisticated ideas and pedagogy underpins all these activities ensuring progress at all times. …

New Premiere

I am so excited! My new piano work will be premiered in a few hour’s time at the Royal College of Music (UK) by Nabillah Jalal. This is part of the “Around the World on 88 Keys – Piano Music From Around the World”, a festival featuring international keyboard music.”Singaporean Fantasy” for solo piano will be streamed live today 10 March 2013 (Sun) via http://www.rcm.ac.uk/live/ between 09:30pm-10:00pm Singapore Time (+8GMT)! It’s been about a year since our last interview and in that time you’ve completed a year of graduate studies in conducting and music pedagogy at the Zoltán Kodály Pedagogical Institute of Music (Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music) in Hungary. How did the year go? Was everything up to your expectations, and was there anything that you did not expect but was pleasantly surprised by? It has been a very fruitful year! I had a fabulous time learning from accomplished teachers and schoolmates alike. I enjoyed very much, lessons in conducting, methodology, voice, piano etc. all taught by excellent musician-pedagogues. The way solfège lessons were taught was particularly new and refreshing for me. Theoretical aspects of harmony, form and analysis are learnt via seamless integration with practical work involving sight-singing, ear-training, keyboard harmony skills, sing & play and part-singing. …
